About Eileen Marcotte - Gourd Artist

There are no two gourds alike. I learn the gourd from choosing it in the field, to scrubbing the dirt off a gourd. Is it smooth, bumpy, soft or hard? Sometimes I see a design, other times I wait for the gourd to decide. When I cut into a gourd, the design begins to form. If the gourd is thick, I can carve in a design with depth. If not, maybe it wants a beautiful color and embellishment. Cracked? Perhaps cut out the crack and sew in a loom for weaving.

The gourd canvas is never the same, like snowflakes.
And I love that!
